How to motivate yourself to go to the gym

Going to the gym may be one of your new year resolutions or it may be because you don’t like the way you look. But many people fail. People don’t know how to stay motivate to go to the gym everyday.

Some people need to go to the gym to boost their body’s health. Many over weight people suffer from medical conditions and to avoid a heart attack or stroke they try to lose weight.

Don’t let this be you, you should always keep your body healthy and take care of yourself to avoid the risk of having any health conditions. But how do you motivate yourself to go to the gym?

This is a very common question. The main reason so many people fail in trying to reach their goals is because of themselves. Most people simply don’t like pushing their body to an uncomfortable limit. However, these are a few simple ways you can motivate yourself to get off the coach and go to the gym.

1. Build a workout you enjoy and like to do

If you enjoy what you are doing in the gym, then it will be so much easier to motivate yourself to go to the gym. In order to workout you don’t have to lift 100kg over your head everyday. In fact, its recommended by physiotherapists to start easing your body into a exercise schedule. You can start where ever you like, even if that means just walking on a treadmill for half an hour a day. Make sure you choose a form of exercise you enjoy. If you are interested in weight lifting, then you should defiantly give it a go.

There are loads of different workout styles out there and each one claims that they are the best. If you are unfamiliar with the different types of gym goers then here they are.

  • Cross fit
  • Power lifting
  • Bodybuilding
  • Cardio

There are a lot of different ways to exercise and however you choose to do it is up to you. Just make sure you pick a workout you enjoy. Ask yourself what do you want to achieve and like to do.

For example, if you just want to lose weight and enjoy cycling, then there’s your workout. You can then build your own routine that will suit you around your busy schedule.

I cannot stress enough how easy going to the gym is when you enjoy it, this is a great way to get motivated.

2. Be reasonable with your goals

There’s no point of setting a goal that is impossible to achieve. You need to be reasonable and start small. No one is able to lose 100 pounds in a month, it is literally impossible.

You need to set a reasonable a goal such as losing 2 pounds of weight a week. This is completely achievable and can be done buy anybody. So, there is no excuse for giving up.

Just don’t go over bored and try to eat 200 grams of protein powder a day.

Make sure you also track your progress. Once you realize that you are losing weight and getting closer to achieving your goal, you will be hooked. This is a great way to motivate yourself to go to the gym.

As soon as you start to notice your results in the mirror you will feel much more confident and happy about yourself. Making progress is key in he gym, there is literally no point in going if you are not constantly progressing. The best wat to track your progress is by either taking pictures of yourself or weighing yourself.

3. Follow your favourite motivational fitness influencers

A great way to stay or get motivated to go to the gym is to take interest in other peoples personal journeys.

For example, when I first started lifting weights 3 years ago, I started to watch fitness influencers on YouTube, such as Bradley Martyn and Eddie Hall. These two people were like icons to me.

Every time I went to the gym I try to aspire to be more like them. This is how I motivated myself everyday to go to gym. When you start to take an interest in the sport of bodybuilding and weight lifting you start to compare yourself to them. Once you start to compare yourself to them you want to be like them and start to push yourself harder to be on their level.

This is a good way for young people to stay consistent and motivate themselves. It may not be quite as affective for older people who aren’t as interested in social media.

However, if you watch fitness icons being interviewed you will notice that a common question asked to them is ”who did you look up to in the gym” and they will always have an answer.

For example, Eddie Hall is the man who broke the deadlift world recorded by lifting 500kg. During an interview he was asked ”who is your icon” and he answered ”Arnold Schwarzenegger” So, it would appear that everyone has or had a person to look up to and motivate themselves to go to the gym.

Why you should get motivated to the gym

The benefits of going to the gym are endless. But here are a few physical and mental benefits you will get from going to the gym. In my opinion mental health in more important than physical. This was how I motivated myself everyday to get up and go to the gym.


  • Your mindset always changes after you finish a workout. You may not want to go and get off the coach, but I can guarantee that you will feel better after it. You always feel like you have accomplished something after you go to the gym and there is no better feeling then having a happy and motivated mindset. The gym is also an outlet for a lot of people. Many people just go there to blow off some steam and clear their head.
  • Obviously the health benefits are a good reason to motivate yourself to go to the gym. It’s more than just long term health. After a few weeks of pushing your body you’ll be stronger, more flexible, and have more stamina. There is a limit to how much exercise you should do. Always bare this in mind. If you workout to much your muscles will be sore and you will end up damaging your body’s health. So, make sure that you don’t over train.

Joining a community of people is always good. It’s nice to be around a group of people that share the same problems as you and want to achieve the same goal as you. when your in the gym you’ll find that their are a lot of people who want to lend you a helping hand and share some of their wisdom with you. It’s also nice to have someone pushing you. Friends can definitely motivate you in the gym and help you achieve your goals. They are great for motivating you and can help you find the motivation to go and workout.

Where should a beginner start

If your a beginner and are intending to start to go to the gym or want to improve your fitness levels, then you should keep reading as it might inspire, motivate, and point you in the right direction.

The first thing you need to do is ask yourself what you want to achieve. This is important, if you want to lose weight then there’s no point in training like a powerlifter and squatting 100kg. The best and most effective way to lose weight in the gym is by cardio and doing high reps on free weights. Trust me I can tell you from experience.

Losing weight and building muscle isn’t rocket science so don’t worry. The reason you put on weight is because you are consuming more calories than your body needs to use. Therefore to lose weight all you need to do is consume fewer calories than your body needs. Everyone has a different metabolism and weight can also be affected by age, so it is impossible for me to tell you the correct amount of calories your body needs.

Calories and you

A good way to find out what your calorie intake is by tracking what you eat and your weight. You can use a free app to help you do this like MyFitnessPal. All you need to do is log your foods after you eat them and weigh yourself in the morning.

It may take a few days until you figure out how many calories you need to maintain your weight. However, it will be worth it. As soon as you know that you are making progress, you will be motivated to make yourself go to the gym.

As soon as you know how many calories your body needs to maintain it’s weight, you can start to lose it. There are a two different ways you can do this.

  • The most affective way of doing this is by putting yourself in a calorie deficit of around 100-200 calories and doing basic exercise such as walking. If you introduce some form of exercise into your daily routine it means that you can still eat a substantial amount of calories.
  • If you do not want to do any form of exercise then you would have to consume fewer calories during the day. You won’t be able to eat any thing extra and would have to be very strict on your diet in order to consume to right amount of calories to allow your body to lose weight.
